This is one of Commisioned’s best (even without Fred!)! I really enjoyed this cd. When he was 9yrs old, my son sang the song “More Than I” at my daughter’s dedication/christening and will hopefully sing it for her again at her wedding! He loves this cd too! When it was lost, we had to replace it!
Does this sound like depression?
Long story short, last year my house caught on fire, extensive damage was caused and I was forced to move into a complete dump. (We weren’t insured). There’s holes in walls, cracked windows, graffiti everywhere; it’s just so uncouth. I attempted to ‘clean’ this place up, but there’s really no point because I’ve got roughly no furniture or anything…This year, my Mother was diagnosed with severe cardiomyopathy (only 18% of her heart works). I think I started cracking under pressure then…I just seriously, want to die sometimes…Anyway…I stopped going to Commissioned Graffiti Canvases school. I just didn’t have any motivation. I remember kids would yell out things at me, and I couldn’t really ‘keep it together’. I blame myself for everything, because if I went to school, then I’d be happier, I’d have friends…gah…My Dad told me that I’d be living in something worse than a housing commission unit when I’m older. That really, hurt me. I mean — I know I’m stupid, I just hate the thought of being a failure. (I know I already am). I’m planning on buying a gun when I’m 18, (I’m 14 now). I’ll commit suicide then; (there’s really no point in life). Woah, sorry, I was going off track…anyway, this ‘depression’ (if it’s even depression…) is really eating me away. Sometimes, I’m suicidal, and other times, I’m happy. I try to be a happier person, when I’m speaking to others, but it’s sometimes too hard…For instance, one time when I was at school, (this was ages ago) my friend was talking about fire, and I had tears in my eyes. But, if nothing about fire was mentioned, then I would of been the ‘normal’ person I am. Help? Do you think I’ve got depression? Do you have to be sad all the time to have depression? Thanks in advance – sorry, I sound a little dumb…14/f

What can I say about Commissioned? I got this album in my 3rd year in high school and instantly became hooked on their music. The best part about the lyrics is that you CAN relate to them. Take for instance “CRY ON”…..’when your burden seems to weigh you down….cry on, God understands your tears..”, or VICTORY?…”hold your peace…vengence is mine”, or…you know what, I could go on cuz I know each one by heart!!
They are a constant source of encouragement to me…whenever I feel down, I pull out one of my albums and I can be sure to feel better.
Try it….a GUARANTEED cure (or a guaranteed point in the right direction) for what ails the heart, mind, body, and the soul.

When I first heard this album, I was in the world and trying to build a diverse music collection. What was built instead was my love for Christ and the way that Commissioned delivered the message. This upbeat and solemn praise to God gave me something to bop to, to meditate on, and to accept Jesus into my life. I’m so glad I was listening.

The younger gospel listener today may have no idea but Fred Hammond wasn’t always a solo artist. He’s one of many who got his start in this male R&B/gospel act including Michael Brooks and Keith Staten (from this lineup), Parkes Stewart (from an earlier lineup), and Marvin Sapp (he’d join the band on their next outing). The band tried to function as a collective with lead vocal duties split nearly equally (except for drummer Michael Williams) and in many cases a song’s writer chose to let someone else sing it. Vocally, this gave them a tight harmony blend as they learned each other’s writing idiosyncracies.
Musically, the band has a bit of an identity crisis. When they focus on new jack swing style R&B sounds they do well but they often introduce formulaic saccharine balladry that threatens to put the listener to sleep. They sometimes forget a song can be “slow” without being lifeless.
HIGHLIGHTS:
“He Set Me Free” starts the disc off in great fashion with a Keith Staten vocal. The song kicks into overdrive toward the end as the band proclaims “Whom the Son has set you free, you know, he’s free indeed” and Staten growls out “In Jesus Christ you’re free for sure”. A skittering drum pattern carries “I Will Never Leave You”, a Parkes Stewart and Mitchell Jones penned mid-tempo assurance of Christ’s commitment. “Let me Tell It” is a bouncy tribute to the Great Commission. (“All the Lord’s done for you/you’re tellin’ me you don’t have nothin’ to say?/You can’t tell it/Oh, let me tell it..”) It has one of the best call and response arrangements on the disc. “Everlasting Love” is one of the rare times they hit upon a ballad that works. Its sax is smoothly soulful, adding a jazzy tinge to the tune where on other songs it feels more like “Kenny G.” territory. The arrangement also doesn’t plod, allowing the drum machines to give it a bit of movement.
LOWS:
“Back to my First Love” is the worst offender in the sugary sweet category. It crawls at a snail’s pace and suffers from a weak hook.
BOTTOM LINE:
The production is very VERY 80s with synths, drum machines, and reverb galore. If you were (or ARE) a New Edition/Bobby Brown fan, this is a more “sanctified” New Jack sound. Skip most of the ballads, though.
3 1/2 stars

This cd is one of the best cd’s created by Commisioned. No doubt you can listen to this cd straight through. It offers uptempo and great slow paced songs. featuring the hit classic “Let me tell it”. and my personal favorite, “the way you love me” This cd is the bomb. Commissioned rocks forever!!!1

First and formost do not listen to people who say that any Commisssioned ballad(slow song)moves at a snails pace. You can go to any one of their albums before State Of Mind and hear how the harmonies is always off the hook. This last reviewer is not a REAL fan of Commissioned. Yes this album/cd is last of the original six but the song quality never lacks. Take “I Am Here” and “Back To My First Love” R&B groups (Jagged Edge, Jodeci, Boyz II Men etc) admitted to coping their style. Commissioned along with other groups(The Winans etc) have set the bar high for others to follow. Hey! don’t let me say it all; get the cd for yourself and find out why this will always be a group you can’t stop listening to.

I haven’t heard the whole CD, but the songs that I did listen to I liked, such as “He Set Me Free”, “I Will Never Leave You”, and “Let Me Tell It”. That last song talks about testifying about the goodness of Jesus and what He’s done for you. Gospel means “good news”, and we (those who know and serve the Lord) should spread the “good news” about Jesus and all that He’s done!!

Excellent Work of Art! Something for every taste and age. Truly Commissioned is Committed to their call! I love to clean the house to track #6 “You’ve Been Good”, (only to end up doing more shouting than cleaning) I know i’m way late buying it but…
(i’m an avid gospel radio listener and recorded some of these tracks on blank cassette, but aint nothin like the real thing!!) After the “Reunion” i said I better hurry and get all their CD’s before they’re all sold out. (I have the original full size albums before CDs ever came out) However, you will be truly BLESSED having a copy of this CD, My favorites are “Glorius Praise”, “Psalms 84″, “Just Worship”, “Believe”, “One Love”, “Charge it to my Head”, “Testify”, (did I just name every track?) Get This One!
Its awesome work! It will Bless you. Marcus and Chris are perfect additions to the group and i’m anticipating watching Commissioned on T.V. walk up to the podium and Thank God for that much overdue Award in the near future. (guys Dont Forget to thank Every Person since the first album in 85 that had a Significant part in you getting to that climactic level in your careers) You are already Winners in the Kingdom of God! Thankyou for such anointed, life-changing music thru the years, keep it coming…! Wow what decorated Crowns you guys will have on in Glory!!, no earthly award even comes close!!!!!!

Let me be honest. After Montell and Marvin left the group after Irreplaceable Love, I thought my boys were finished. My heart greatly yearned for more Commissioned and I was resigned to the fact that I wasn’t going to get it. Then here comes this album. I was still a little skeptical(why I don’t know), because of the two new members. However, these guys did it once again. It’s amazing how the blend of their voices get better even though there’s been constant change! Mitchell and Karl are the anchors, and Marcus and Chris fit nicely. The harmony is incredible. It sounds like these guys have been singing together forever. You need to buy this album. “Create In Me A Clean Heart” is wonderful. “Trying Of Your Faith” is another Commissioned neck-breaker. This album does nothing but further enhance the legacy that is “Commissioned”

When I first heard Commissioned as a child, I found their sound strange and unique. However it subconciously left an impression on me. Years later, I rediscovered this dynamic group with the release of their reunion album (I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Fred Hammond was part of this group. He is one of my favorite gospel artists). It was great seeing them all together and matching faces and names with the voices. They performed many songs that I liked in the past, and I was surprised that they were the ones that sung them. After hearing the reunion album, I grew more interested in Commissioned, and soon started started buying their early albums. The music took a while to grow on me, but it did, and soon I was looking for more. I started looking for albums that contained the hits performed at the reunion concert, hits such as “Let Me Tell It”, “Secret Place”, “Please You More”, and “I Can’t Live Without You.” I recently bought “State of Mind”, and I got to hear “I Am Here” (the original is beautiful), “Let Me Tell It”, and “Everlasting Love.” I also bought “Time and Seasons” a few weeks later, and it was interesting to hear how they had changed over the years but their message was still the same. I particularly like the way they seamlessly combine scriptures in their songs. They are truly anointed by the Lord. The songs on this album didn’t affect me quite the way the previous ones had, but I believe it’s only a matter of time. I particularly like “Testify”, “Psalms 84″, “Clean Heart” (I kept playing that one over and over), and “Walk Right.” This was their last studio album, and their music has been blessing for 20 years. I like Commissioned and I hope they’re not done as group. It would be nice if they were to release a new studio album for their 20th anniversary, but I know that it must be the Lord’s timing, so I am willing to wait longer if necessary.

This album is beautiful!!! The first couple of times I listened to it, I literally cried. Unlike many artists today: they recognize God, their words have meaning, their vocals are flawless, and their harmony is great! On this record, each person shines! Regrettably, I must admit that I passed over this c.d. on several occassions. I figured since most of the former members had gone solo, it wouldn’t be the same. In a way, I was right. This group is not like it used to be… it’s BETTER! These guys have wonderful chemistry, and I am looking so forward to hearing more from them.

The reunion DVD is AWESOME, talk about being encouraged!
I loved seeing all the guys back together again and hope for yet another reunion soon. I’ve been a Commissioned fan for approx. 15 years, and now my daughter who is 5 yrs old is also a hugh fan who knows all of their songs. The Lord has truly GIFTED these men with incredible talent, and I’m happy that they decided to share their AWESOME talent with the world again.
I would also recommend the Reunion CD, which I just purchased 3 days ago.
May the Lord continue to bless!

I know I have a very busy life. But how in the world I was SOOOO busy that I completely missed in 2002 “The Commissioned Reunion Live” DVD is totally beyond me, since it is one of my favorite gospel groups!
I “just discovered” it earlier this year on some musical list and mentioned it to my musical brother, who simply said GET IT! I did in February through Netflix and listened for the first few minutes while I was working on writing my midterm exams. I knew from the first couple cuts, I would not be able to write the exams and listen too, because I was TOO into the music to concentrate on the exams. So I turned it off and vowed to watch it straight through for the full 2 hours and 2 minutes “when I had time.”
I FOUND the time just last week, and I have not ceased playing this DVD over and over and over again since then! What a musical masterpiece! If you are a Commissioned fan, this is a MUST have for your collection!! It contains practically EVERY hit song they ever sang – fast and slow. The first 18 minutes is a non-stop, praise dancing jewel, which also is now my new workout tape, since I have recommitted myself to get fit again!. You WILL be motivated to get up and move! The drummers and horn section are slamming, and the harmonies are as beautiful or more so from the originals. Also, they look like they just had a lot of fun being back together again.
For me, the music brings back fond memories of God’s faithfulness to me during my master’s and doctoral years, which Commissioned songs got me through. In my humble opinion, Commissioned was the MOST theologically accurate contemporary guy group of its day. I also believe THAT is the reason why they never hit “the big time” in terms of “cross-over” appeal (which Fred speaks about), which is almost a requirement for music today, even Christian music. They sang CONSISTENTLY and PLAINLY about JESUS (not “him”) and challenged the body to holiness and righteousness living. Not too many cross-over audiences (or producers) wanted to hear these kind of powerful and distinctly Christian messages.
Some of my favorites are: “Get Back in the Saddle,” “I’m Going On,” “Help Somebody,” “Hold Me,” and “Go and Tell Somebody.” And my absolute three all time favorites are: “Tis So Sweet,” “Ordinary Just Won’t Do,” and ‘KING OF GLORY!!!!”
If you don’t have this DVD, as my brother told me, GET IT! Enjoy these brothers in Christ, who never got their “just due” in the music world, but will be rewarded in heaven for “going to tell somebody!”
Carol, Shouting to the music!

I went to this concert when it came to Virginia. It was so good. It was nice to see Commissioned together again, and the music was more than amazing.
I bought the video back then but played it so much that it was ruined. I finally ordered the DVD and I am so glad I did.
