Anybody tuned in, and turned on, by the old cubist, modernist UPA school of cartooning should avoid this amateurish dreck like the plague. For one thing, the hipper-than-thou text is incredibly annoying. Get this from your snooty author: “The retro family is a riot. Think of it as the quintessential 1960s sitcom family–but with each member suffering from Attention Deficit Order. Each family member is a turbo-charged nerd, self-centered in the extreme but with a weird patina of sugarcoating.” That’s the whole politically liberal tone of the book. It’s not so much a celebration of Mid-Century art as a putdown of the 1950s and the family structure. Really weird. That could be acceptable if the art were any good. But it’s garbage you wouldn’t accept from a first-year student. It’s an eyesore and way off the mark. Like a previous one-star review has noted, if you want to learn this kind of cartooning go to the original sources who had talent. Pick up the essential Cartoon Modern from

I want to buy a book with artwork or photography in it; I know they’re out there, but I can’t find any online?
I’ve seen these before all over the place at borders. Books that are just pages full of art people have already made, with themes like “graffiti” or “the 18th century” or “art of pixar” or things like that, or for photos, they’re themed like “chicago” or “the pyramids” or “modern skylines,” that sort of thing, and sometimes they get called coffee table books. However, I Cool CArtoons Graffiti wanted to find some like on amazon, or the borders website, and I can’t seem to find any! I think I’m searching the wrong things on the search engines, because all I get are books on how to draw or how to take photos, which obviously isn’t what I want. Is there some name for this kind of book or some easier way to see some of the cool ones, or top sellers, or whatever? I don’t have any particular theme in mind, I just like looking and photography and artwork.This is slightly irrelevant, but I especially like modern artwork (not pop art, just art that was made sometime in the past fifty years), and I like bright colors and cartoon like figures or graphic arts type things that make you think or are just plain adorable, or macabre.So I guess what I want is a) what to search that will help me find what I’m looking for, not books on how to draw/take picturesb) a list of these kinds of booksand/or, c) some recommendations of books you’ve already seen.Thanks!

    Great examples of retro-style characters. Give detailed explanation on how to build up the character and create new ones.

    This is another great title from Christopher Hart. In this book, he takes a look of some of the cartoons and animation that is popular today. This seems to be an era of the “retro” look and feel and Mr. Hart uses this book as a resouce to explore and teach these cool cartooning techniques!

    Gift this book to yourself or the retro cartoon fan in your life!

    I will admit, I hate most Christopher Hart books. But this one is quite unique. It’s not trying to impersonate a style like anime or manga. It’s reviving a very unique style of art referred to as “retro”.

    I love this book because this is definitely my style. But the style in this book (and some of the advice) is quite limiting. Cartoons like Kim Possible, Danny Phantom, and to a lesser extent Teen Titans the animated show really show off the retro style evolved to a great extent.

    I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a unique style beyond anime, manga (which I happened to draw all the time before this book), and Marvel Comics.

    But it definitely would be good to have a basic understanding of anatomy, since this book does not go into it really at all.
