Bombs Graffiti Artists on Ebay
October 19, 2010 - 6:15 pm

I originally purchased this documentary with the hope of using it in my 7th grade art class. We are discussing graffiti and community art. Unfortunately, the title “Bomb It” could be the way the f bombs were dropping left and right. But that’s something you would have to expect when gang members are being interviewed. I found it to be very interesting and informative. It follows the world of graffiti from its start in Philly to places all over the world. The artists that are featured have different styles and stories to tell. Even though I couldn’t show the film to the class, I am still able to impart the history it tells.
What is peace without justice? What is love without truth or honesty?
Is it peaceful to sweep problems and feelings under the carpet and pretend that they are not there? Is it peaceful for everyone to have a nice polite dinner party while there is the proverbial elephant in the room? Is it loving to use sweet words and speak softly when there is a time-bomb ticking inside?I mean even Pollyanna told the truth. The people who didn’t want to know the truth hated her but came around in time, and in time an entire town was healed. Marianne Williamson says that Pollyanna was strong and brave, yet we tend to disparage her by putting down anyone who is a “Pollyanna.”On my end I think that there cannot be peace without justice, and there cannot be love without truth or honesty. And I don’t mean tongue lashings or negative criticism disguised as “the truth.” As one Brooklyn graffiti artist put it, “You can be right and wrong at the same time.”What Bombs Graffiti Artists do you think?A thought: In movies like Mr. Holland’s Opus, Freedom Writers, and Music of the Heart, the teachers could not reach the students until they earned the students’ trust and respect by being honest–emotionally, intellectually, and creatively–in the spirit of love. They wanted the best for their students, so they had to be at their own best, not by being “nice,” but by being real. My students can spot a fake a mile away and they challenge me to “keep it real.”Words can mean dif. things to dif. people. This is natural. But for the record, by justice, I do not mean revenge or counter-attacking. Justice, in this context, or in light of this question, means (to me) the fair and equitable treatment of all, which is of course up for further interpretation. But I would hope that ev. could try to understand what I mean by justice. As for peace, my own spiritual path orients me toward the cultivation of inner peace through meditation, prayer, contemplation, inspirational reading, music, creativity, etc.; but if my cultivation of inner peace does not gradually lead to me dealing with other people in the physical realm or the world in a way that is at once loving and truthful, and in the interest of peace, then my inner peace is a fantasy. We do as we believe, or what we do attests to what we believe, imho. I don’t think that one is antithetical to the other.Bill, this is not cynical. In fact, it is a positive call for peace with justice, and love with honesty. Being honest does not mean being attacking. I feel attacked by your response, but I can forgive you. It seems that the question struck a chord with you and brought up a lot of your own issues. I mean no harm. It is a question. We all have the right to our own opinions, but in the future can you express yours without disparaging mine? I hope so. I wish you peace, true peace.
