This is Graff’s collection of some of the most precious diamonds ever to be discovered. The book is huge: it has a very elegant size, the photos are very high quality and the treasures look quite sublime and alive. I am amazed how masterfully these professional photographers can manage to capture diamonds nowadays. They look phenomenal and so very crisp. You get to see every facade and edge, which is undoubtedly helpful to see some of the science behind it all… or just to appreciate their beauty in these diamonds’ totality.

Check it out if you admire great diamonds, the art and science of diamond cutting and shaping, and the Graff heritage in general. If anything, it also looks extremely stunning as a coffee table book.

I am in the process of writing my dissertation and this book has been a great help in improving both the flow of my argument and the style of my writing. Simple measures to avoid using redundant phrases such as, “According to___________” which get boring after awhile. I highly reccomend it to writers at all levels.

I was amazed seeing this book. It gets to the heart of crafting sharp, insightful essays. No fooling around. If my students would make these moves, they’d be way out in front. As teachers, our major challenge is finding ways to have students practice these techniques.
[P.S. - my book (noted) shows effective forms for quoting in its final essay.]

This simply stated reference book gives details in concise writing techniques that I used from the first time I opened the book! My collegiate career would have been easier if I’d had this before I became a senior – what an awesome find – recommended by a peer.

I bought this book for my English class, but have never actually read it. Does have some good stories and writing tips, but not actually useful. Okay if you’re a writer. Buy the St. Martin’s handbook….way more useful.

The Thing about Georgie was added to our later elementary library reading program earlier this year. Curious, I picked up the book and was delighted with this tale of a boy with a disability meeting the challenges of growing up.. sometimes well, sometimes not so well. As the narrator so aptly describes, some of Georgie’s struggles are due to his being a dwarf; others are just related to his being a 10 year old boy.

But the real test.. I then gave this book to my 11 year old daughter and her 10 year old friend as a summer read. Neither are avid readers, and my daughter is somewhat picky about what she reads. Both loved this book and raced through it in a few days. A good story that has my daughter excited about a book? The Thing about Georgie is a home run!

I picked up this book to read because it has been nominated for the Illinois Rebecca Caudill award this year. As a fourth grade teacher, I found this story to be a wonderful depiction of personal struggles and friendships children experience within their daily lives. From the point of view of a young boy, Georgie, the reader gains perspective of what it is to be a person smaller that others but he truly discovers that everyone has gifts to share no matter what his size. I think this is an excellent example for children to be introduced to either as a read-aloud or independent selection. I would highly recommend this book and I plan to read it aloud to my class during the upcoming school year.

This book is called The Thing About Georgie by Lisa Graff. Georgie is a boy in the 4th grade. But the thing is, he is very short. Sometimes he gets teased at school. Georgie has a best friend named Andy. They do a lot of things together like they have a dog walking business and they play many games together. But, Andy gets another friend named Russ and Andy starts to ditch Georgie for Russ. Another big problem is that his mom is pregnet. Georgie doesn’t like this. Georgie is also afraid that the new baby will be taller than him. Meanie the Jeanie is a mean girl at Georgie’s school. She makes fun of him. At the end they do a project together and they actually become pretty good friends. I like this book because it constantly had new events happening so it kept me interested. That is why I gave it 5 stars. I would recommend this book to people who like realistic fiction and storys about kids.

I checked out this book at the library for my 4th grade son. I started reading it to see if he’d like it and couldn’t put it down. I was worried it would be a preachy, tired, politically correct lesson about tolerance. I found it both real and very moving. It was funny and interesting and extremely well written for a children’s book. This book should be read in schools. Bravo!!

  9. Gillingham Says:

Very disappointed, this book was a real let down, not worth the $150 I paid for it, Graff have better advertisments in the magazines. And it was very hard to read, not written well at all.

  10. Edson Says:

For anyone who reads/writes/teaches in academic style – this is a true gem of a book. Easy to understand, clever & most of al – HELPFUL. I may require it for my students.

  11. Kerns Says:

I wish I had this title just before starting college–my reading and writing skills would have been more engaging and fulfilling. After reading “They Say I say” I now understand the real benefit to having a conversation with a text. The authors thought me that all text is a conversation already in process. They further thought me how to be mindful of the point of view of others, in this conversation and how to find my own voice in it. I will remain eternally grateful for their efforts in this endeavor.

I think everyone should enter into the conversation of, “They Say I Say.”

This book also will improve your english and the ability to persuade your readers with your essays.

I used it briefly to refamiliarize myself with how to write in college, it served its purpose and it is really elementary.
