Ruby Hale ran through the hallway of her school, she was late again and she knew that if she didn’t get to class before the last bell a detention would be coming her way. Ruby opened the door to her maths class and the bell echoed through the school, she cursed her luck. Slowly, Ruby crept to her desk and carefully sat down in silence.Living in Tweed Heads meant the ocean and in class you could hear the waves softly pounding against the shore.“Where have you been?” Sally Moore, her friend whispered, tapping her watch.Ruby gave Sally a worried look and shrugged, trying not to be noticed by Mrs Millen, her least favourite teacher. ‘Why do they have to have the worst teacher in the worst class?’ Ruby thought.“So now, we will be doing revision on our exam coming up in a few weeks,” Mrs Millen walked over to Ruby with an evil smile on her face. “Nice of you to join us Miss Hale,” She placed a detention slip on her desk then walked away smacking her old cane on every desk she passed. Even though it’s illegal to even touch students she still carried that stick around ‘Just to keep them like they used to be in my day Sir,’ she’d told the principal. After Maths Ruby shifted off to another miserable lesson before recess, English. She liked the teacher but hated the subject. Ms Carrie was about as nice as teachers come, she tried to make the lessons as fun as possible but unfortunately, a teachers version of fun was reading a text book or watching a movie in black and white. “Good morning class, today we will be watching the movie subjected on the book we’ve just read…”Ruby groaned silently ‘the first ‘Dracula’ graffiti bag by marc jacobs movie ever made, oh how exciting!’ She decided she’d get more of a thrill looking through her old art book, so she pulled it out of her bag and flicked through the pages. There wasn’t really any art in it, just some graffiti and pasted on pictures. As she got to the end she noticed some colour shinning though the last page, she skipped through and starred at a lose bit of paper. It was a picture of two army officers they were standing proudly with an Australian flag between them. Ruby could remember drawing and painting this for her Dad but she must have forgotten to give it to him. Ruby’s father was a Military officer along with Kyle Freeman’s Dad. Kyle is Ruby’s best friend and he has been, ever since she started pre-school. They would make mud pies and throw them at each other, then get sat in the corner for rolling along the floor. Ruby drew pictures for her dad all the time when she was little and she would send them off to him along with a letter over to Afghanistan. Ruby was proud of her dad. Sad, that he was never home, but proud. The bell rang and every student in the class walked out as the lights were flicked on again. Ruby stayed put, starring at the picture.“Ruby?” Ms Carrie said walking over to her “The bell-” Ruby’s teacher stopped as she noticed the picture her student was starring at. Ms Carrie dragged a chair over from Sally’s desk and sat down next to Ruby. “It’s hard isn’t it?” She began; Ruby looked up at her teacher.“How would you know?” She asked a little confused.Ms Carrie leaned back into her chair “My Dad went to the Vietnam war when I was ten, and when he finally came back I was 14. He was never the same after that war,”Ruby looked down at the picture one last time before closing her book. “Thanks for your concern but this isn’t war, Dad chose to go and fight for his country, no one forced him,” Ruby got up and pushed her chair in “Bye,” she said flatly, walking out. * * * * *When Ruby finally reached the cafeteria everyone had already disserted the tables and gone outside into the sun. Ruby sighed as the cafeteria lady dropped a cold, stale muffin onto her tray. “Hey, Ruby!” Ruby turned around to see Kyle holding out a slice of homemade chocolate cake. She smiled. Kyle smiled back and gave the cake to Ruby.”Don’t you want it?” She asked, dumping the muffin into the bin. Kyle shook his head.“Not hungry,” He lied. Ruby slowly ate the cake as Kyle led her to a table and they sat down. When she’d finished her cake she looked up at Kyle “Thanks!” She said dusting her hands together. “You really want to tell me why you didn’t want it?”Kyle laughed. “So you still want to go for surf this afternoon?” Kyle asked smiling. Ruby open her mouth but she saw Sally walking over and she looked upset.“Ruby, Kyle ,” She sniffed looking down at her feet ”… I heard what happened, I’m so sorry,” Sally started to sob so she handed them each a gift wrapped box and ran away, covering her face with her hands. Ruby and Kyle looked at each other. “Do you know anything about this?” Ruby asked lifting up the present and shaking it. Kyle shook his head. Before Kyle could answer the principal, James Moore, Sally Moore’s dad, interrupted them.“Can I please see you both in my office?” He sighed. Sorry its long plz see prt 2.:)
